Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer Launch Guide: Maps, Modes, and What to Play First

October 22, 2026

MW4 Multiplayer launches October 23 with 20 combat spaces, 33 weapons, familiar modes, and several genuinely new ideas. Here is the practical day-one breakdown.

Modern Warfare 4 arrives on October 23 with a launch package that is unusually broad even by Call of Duty standards. There are compact duel maps, traditional 6v6 lanes, full Ground War spaces, a modular arena, more than a dozen modes, and 33 weapons waiting for their first balance pass in the hands of millions of players.

The raw numbers are useful, but they do not answer the question most players actually have: where should I start? This is our practical CODMETAHUB guide to the first night of MW4 Multiplayer.

The launch map pool at a glance

MW4 launches with 12 Core 6v6 maps, three 32v32 Ground War maps, four dedicated Gunfight maps, and Kill Block. Shipment follows on October 27, so the initial 6v6 rotation has a few days to breathe before the camo-grind blender returns.

The Core list is Cachette, Coal, Lithium, Lotus, Mumbai, Munition, Nautical, Reactor U92, Rooftops, Sentry, Silkworm, and Transit 213. On paper, the mix looks healthier than a playlist dominated by one visual theme. Rooftops brings tight New York elevation changes, Lotus and Nautical lean into coastal South Korea, Lithium opens up a refinery under the Sierra Mountains, and Sentry uses a whiteout-hit Russian military base.

Our advice: spend the first matches learning two maps at opposite ends of the pace spectrum. Pick one compact map for recoil and movement testing, then one with longer lanes to understand how quickly MW4 damage falls away. It is a faster route to a dependable class than changing five attachments after every death.

Ground War and Gunfight are not side dishes

Imjin Farmland, Wolves Stadium, and Forest form the 32v32 lineup. Farmland favors vehicles and long sightlines; Stadium creates a denser urban fight across buildings, transit routes, tunnels, and rooftops; Forest connects those ideas with wooded terrain and off-road paths. If a weapon feels excellent in 6v6 but collapses beyond medium range, Ground War will expose it immediately.

Gunfight launches on Cafe, Library, NYC, and Smuggler. These are the best places to learn MW4's base gun behavior because the mode removes the comfort of a personal meta class. You quickly notice sprint-to-fire penalties, awkward irons, slow reloads, and which weapons remain predictable without five perfect attachments.

Kill Block could be the launch wildcard

Kill Block is a reconfiguring training facility with more than 500 possible layouts. Sections shift between rounds, with pieces inspired by familiar Modern Warfare locations such as Crash, Highrise, and Shoot House. It supports 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight at launch, with 6v6 support planned later.

That structure rewards players who read space instead of memorizing one head-glitch route. The strongest early Kill Block teams will communicate what changed, identify the new power position, and stop sprinting into the route that worked last round.

The new modes worth learning first

Hijack revolves around a Data Spike that can be carried, thrown, and passed before being planted at the enemy Comm Station. It is objective play with a handoff mechanic, so spacing matters more than stacking six players directly on the carrier.

Inflation turns collected cash into pressure: carrying more makes you a more valuable—and more visible—target. Collateral combines round-based tactics with a buy phase, beginning players with a pistol and $800 before objective play funds later rounds. Ground War's Combat Outpost adds territory, forward spawn locations, and team upgrades to the large-map formula.

The classics remain: Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Free-for-All, Frontline, Search & Destroy, Gunfight, and Gun Game. Hardcore variants use limited HUD, friendly fire, reduced health, and no health regeneration.

Every MW4 launch map

All 12 Core 6v6 maps

  • Cachette: a covert armory hidden around a French rail terminal. The wine warehouse, mechanic garage, and surrounding yard should create quick changes between indoor cover and exposed crossings.
  • Coal: an industrial battleground whose harder surfaces and working spaces suit disciplined corner clearing. Expect close fights to break into longer exterior lanes.
  • Lithium: a refinery in rural Mexico beneath the Sierra Mountains. Processing structures divide sightlines, so rifles should control approaches while SMGs contest the machinery and interiors.
  • Lotus: a South Korean fishing village damaged by an amphibious assault. Its coastal buildings and disrupted streets should reward players who check several heights rather than staring down one lane.
  • Mumbai: a dense residential district built around a Victorian market and rail line. This looks like a constant rotation map: use the market for cover, but respect attackers arriving from the tracks and adjoining streets.
  • Munition: a North Korean command facility spanning a depot, monitoring station, skybridge, crane, water tower, and hangars. The number of landmarks should make callouts easy, though the vertical structures create dangerous crossfires.
  • Nautical: a ferry attempting to leave a conflict zone amid fire and debris. Vessel maps naturally compress routes; watch stairways and deck transitions instead of repeatedly challenging the longest central angle.
  • Reactor U92: a South Korean reactor complex in meltdown. Industrial interiors and emergency clutter should favor short, deliberate clears, while exterior approaches provide room for range-focused builds.
  • Rooftops: snow-covered New York hotel roofs connected through a greenhouse, HVAC area, boiler space, patio, and skylights. Elevation is the identity here: winning the roof is useful only if somebody protects the access points below it.
  • Sentry: a Russian military base caught in a whiteout, with maintenance, generator, substation, command, and barracks areas. Reduced visual clarity makes suppressors, readable optics, and minimap information especially valuable.
  • Silkworm: a South Korean shopping district of alleys, apartments, a convenience store, gaming den, and subway. It should reward frequent route changes; lingering in one shop invites a flank through the connected urban spaces.
  • Transit 213: an Indian parking facility crowded with buses and surrounded by repair, fuel, construction, and high-rise areas. Buses break the ground-level view, but nearby elevation can expose players moving between them.

Shipment arrives October 27 at a Russian harbor. The familiar compact footprint will immediately become the fastest option for weapon levels and close-range challenges, but it is a poor place to judge whether a build works on the rest of the game.

Three 32v32 Ground War maps

Imjin Farmland spreads fighting across fields, waterways, farms, a mill, roads, and a railway. Vehicles matter and uncovered rotations invite long-range fire. Wolves Stadium is the urban alternative, layering multi-story buildings, transit routes, tunnels, roofs, and surrounding hills. Forest mixes wooded hillside, paved and off-road routes, a train, guard tower, gas station, and barracks. Together they test three different skills: open-ground planning, vertical urban clearing, and target acquisition through natural cover.

Four dedicated Gunfight arenas

Cafe uses a Paris courtyard with a theater, kiosk, fountain, statue, and playable perimeter. Library is a wood-paneled interior divided by bookcases and a central walkway. NYC is a winter-night event space containing a stage, stands, equipment, vendors, and elevated views. Smuggler shifts the duel into a rail yard of train cars and warehouses. Gunfight rounds last 50 seconds, teams race to six rounds, identical loadouts rotate every two rounds, and an overtime flag prevents endless hiding.

Kill Block explained

Kill Block is a modular training facility capable of more than 500 configurations, with recognizable ideas drawn from Crash, Highrise, and Shoot House. It supports 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight at launch; standard 6v6 support is due later. Because sections reconfigure, memorizing one opening route is less valuable than quickly identifying the current cover, longest sightline, and safest crossover.

Every launch mode and how it scores

  • Team Deathmatch: ten minutes, first team to 100 eliminations.
  • Domination: hold three flags and reach 200 points. Two flags create dependable pressure; chasing all three can flip spawns.
  • Hardpoint: five minutes of match time, first to 250. Rotating before the next hill often matters more than one final scrap on the old one.
  • Kill Confirmed: ten minutes, first to 75 collected enemy tags. Denying friendly tags is as important as producing kills.
  • Free-for-All: ten minutes, first player to 30.
  • Frontline: ten minutes, first to 100. Teams spawn from protected home bases; kills farther from your base are worth more, and sides swap midway.
  • Search & Destroy: two-minute, single-life rounds, first to six. Attackers plant at one of two sites and defenders can win by eliminating, defusing, or surviving the clock.
  • Gun Game: ten minutes and a 15-weapon progression. Each elimination advances the weapon; the final elimination wins.
  • Inflation: a ten-minute cash fight. Valuable carriers become high-value targets, killed players drop money, and overtime increases the stakes through multipliers.
  • Hijack: four-minute rounds with a 300-point goal. Carry, throw, or pass the Data Spike, plant it at the enemy Comm Station, protect the upload, and defuse enemy attempts.
  • Collateral: two-minute economy rounds, first to six. Everyone begins with a pistol and $800, then earns cash to buy weapons, armor, equipment, perks, and streak support. There are no respawns or custom loadouts; lost gear is gone, while unspent cash remains.
  • Combat Outpost: a 20-minute 32v32 territory battle to 1,500 points. Captured outposts become forward spawns and can be reinforced to provide local UAV coverage and vehicles such as the JLTV and light tank.

Proving Grounds supplies tutorials and timed courses with S-rank targets. Possession is scheduled for pre-season and asks teams to kill and then possess an enemy, location, or loadout depending on the variant. Infected also joins the rotation, while Hardcore versions use reduced health, limited HUD, friendly fire, and no automatic regeneration.

What to play for each goal

Use Core for general class evaluation, Gunfight to understand unfamiliar weapons, Ground War for recoil and range, Proving Grounds for settings, and Shipment only for concentrated unlock work. Objective players should learn Hijack and Combat Outpost early; coordinated Search teams will recognize Collateral's economy, but must account for persistent cash and purchased equipment. That is the complete launch menu—and enough variety that one universal “best build” will rarely be the honest answer.

Our day-one plan

  1. Run Proving Grounds before touching sensitivity and movement settings mid-match.
  2. Play several Core matches with one flexible rifle or SMG instead of chasing every unlock.
  3. Use Gunfight to sample weapons outside your planned class.
  4. Use Ground War to test range and optic choices.
  5. Check the CODMETAHUB MW4 meta page once real launch data begins settling.
  6. Use MW4 Level Builds when the recommended endgame attachments are still locked.

Launch-week rankings will move quickly. Treat every early “best gun” claim as a starting point, not a permanent answer. The most useful class is the one that fits the map, mode, and engagement range you are actually playing.
